Playing
the World Cup Wimbledon dual roles
Are you going to watch Wimbledon? " I don't want to know about the football, I don't care, who the players are,
what the score is? all the ins, and outs, of it all, who won and lost, I don't want to know, anything at all, so don't tell
me." as, Sue said.
Playing, the long ball seems
to attract attention, dual sports, at the same time, can inspire confidence. With the World Cup Wimbledon, it makes
you think, what to keep your eye on?, rather like, on a Saturday night, with too much, going on. As, John said, at the
club: "Jack Kramer is a man worth listening too."
" If tennis could survive
decades under the tyranny of the amateur officials, it should now be able to succeed despite the greed of players. I
fought all my life for players; I was one, and I hate to say anything against them. I think they act every bit as irresponsibly
toward the game as the old amateur officials used to.
The trouble with the players
is that they're pulling in two directions. The big stars and their agents want to free-lance like movie stars, and the
average players want socialism, a welfare tennis state. Neither bunch seems to care much for the game that is caught
in the middle. " That is both of them for you.............! Being caught in the middle, a small or big ball, you
have to look both ways, try crossing the street, looking, one way.
The ladies, have complained,
about the prize money, the are not even there at the World Cup at least it is not an issue. It will take
years, to get close.
This, has been played out,
before, we have it every year in tennis, all the same nations: doubt they could do it every year, in the quarters of the Euro
football cup, they had six former champions in the line up...As Kramer writes: " The Davis Cup is conducted in an archaic
way. It should not be spread out around the world, different venues, different times. It should be patterned after
the World Cup of soccer, with the sixteen top nations assembling at one site. ( I would say seed the top eight and make the
second eight qualify.) It would be sport- and the TV coverage would carry to hundreds of millions of homes around the
world. Great tennis stadiums would be constructed to hold the cup; countries would bid to host it. The idea is not original
with me; almost everybody in tennis-except for the officials in the small nations who like the cup the way it is-support this
idea or some variation of it. Someday we're going to get it."
" Is this train the Frankfurt
special?.......................when we get to our headquarters......we will be good boys and follow orders.........blow
whistle blow.... go special go... the Frankfurt special....has a special, way to go...................! An Elvis song.
As a German girl said: "
I want to know what you really think of us... I want to know....... NOW......." everyone is there at the moment. Maybe,
the place to be......
As C.S Lewis writes: " If
a man asked what was the point of playing football, it would not be much good saying ' in order to score goals,' for trying
to score goals is the game itself, not the reason for the game, and you would really only be saying that football was football
- which is true, but not worth saying. In the same way, if a man asks what is the point of behaving decently, it is
no good replying, ' in order to benefit society,' for trying to benefit society, in other words being unselfish ( for ' society'
after all only means ' other people' ), is one of the things decent behaviour consists in; all you; are really saying is that
decent behaviour is decent behaviour. You would have said just as much if you had stopped at the statement, ' Men ought
to be unselfish'. "
" It is illegal to sell a child,
or an adult in this country, they sell footballers, what do they do for the Community, or Society, the kids treat them
like mini-gods, I don't. All for kicking a ball.....twenty two men on a field, come on, I can do better than that,
we can do better than that.." as Ken Commented.
Those four walls that exist,
where once the ball is out, it means nothing, you have to keep it in, as an elderly man said: " I have to get out, or I am
stuck inside four walls, and start speaking to myself, you need to get some fresh air ". When the ball is out, it all
does not matter. " You know sport, should not be a religion, it should not be that way, it is all about trust, when
you pass that ball, you trust the person, who have you given it too. "; " It is all about thinking, you have to be able to
do that. "
In Motivation and the Real
world the workplace and sports teams, do not connect. He claimed, it was not the same, a player does not do a 40 hour
week, and having it the way it is. Maybe for Coaches, admin staff, it may be, that way. Some of them have
done 80 hour weeks. So these hyped up, sport, workplace stories, may not be accurate. As Tom said: " No, footballer
is going to get up on a cold Sunday morning when it freezing, unless he thinks he can win, if you take winning out of the
equation, you lose a big part of it, what is left?."
" It is a very stressful
situation and something you must be ready to deal with. Tennis players are already able to serve but you still see them practising
again and again. The more you practise, the better you become. " As Marco Van Basten comments, the Holland Coach, talking
about penalties. There is, another one, as well: " I cannot believe they act like this, we are waiting for the police,
they will give him an £80 penalty. The hospitals beds are not always available, there is too much of this, it just wastes
our time, it makes me so angry. " The ambulance lady, talking about a drunk, on, the side of the road.
All this, is about being
the winner, if you can, as John pointed out, the owner of the Fish and Chip shop: " When I pay my money, I want to see the
best, that is why I pay! " As Arnold Bennet the author used to say: " The best is good enough for me.";
" When I went along to that Circus, you should have seen it, it was truly World Class, everything is about it, was first rate,
yes it was, it was that good. " As Ken said.
Running, two shows, at the
same time, dual roles, one, can only win. An upper class sport, where it is not easy to play, comparing that with a working
class game, where anyone can play; furthermore many have, " I last played at 52 " as mentioned. " You know, it
all does not matter, if we win that would be great, and I will support them, all the way, what I want is the best player or
best team to win, if that is us, that is fine. whoever it may be. " As Jack, pointed out.
" Thus a writer who writes
well and to the purpose, need not( and probably will not) worry that he is not Shakespeare; a climber of many peaks need not
mourn that he has not attained the summit of Everest; the discoverer of a minor mathematical truth, that is neither Newton
nor Einstein, and so on. It is enough that we follow faithfully our nature and our business. This, and this only, is
the great thing." C. G. L. Du Cann.
